Yes ma'am

Where I grew up, the saying "yes ma'am" or "yes sir" would be considered patronizing.. But that is not true here. Everyone, and I mean every one, says it. Quickly I began to worry, am I going to have to reach this to my kids? It feel so unnatural for me.  By I just as quickly decided that our kids are good at blending, code switching to fit in.  I was sure I would not have to teach anyone but myself. And indeed, last night I asked Zoe if she had her B-braces ( her backup braces as she calls them, a retainer to me), and she replied:
"yes ma'am"
and it did not sound patronizing at all.
